Ever wonder why they call it “Spring” Break? It is hardly Spring (March 21st) anywhere. I think it is called that because college kids from all over “Spring” their way to warm spots throughout the Southern United States, the Caribbean and the Central America. Here, in Key West, we have been experiencing these beach-going, lower Duval Street revelers for weeks already! While I never went on a Spring Break trip, I think I have watched every movie made about spring break from every decade since the 50’s, living vicariously. Key West is one of the hot spots. I can’t even imagine what it must have been like back in the 50’s and 60’s. I have been reading those wonderful historical publications which show photos from the island back in the day. Key West looked like a simple fishing town with a HUGE Naval presence. I wonder how many spring breakers there were then with no scooters to rent with those annoying noisy beep, beep, beeps? I would hazard that it was great fun anyway.
Anyone reading this who happened to be there back then, I would love to hear about it.
So to all you darling, scantily clad, gorgeous kids - have a blast! The years are all too fleeting…....
